Chapter 5 of 21 · Theme: Data and Interoperability

The Digital Titanic: The Tower of Babel and the Cost of Silence

Lack of interoperability (HL7 FHIR) as the Tower of Babel; vendor lock-in as the "Hotel California".

The chapter compares the fragmentation of health systems to a digital Tower of Babel: laboratory, imaging, records and billing speaking different languages, unable to exchange information even within the same institution. Standards such as HL7 FHIR appear as the attempt to build a common language, while the vendor lock-in of proprietary systems is described as a technological "Hotel California": easy to check in, nearly impossible to leave. Without this basic interoperability, the authors argue, even the best AI in the world keeps working with an incomplete version of the patient.
